I was recently citated for underage drinking at college...It\'s been 2 months and i still haven't heard from PENNdot requesting me to send in my license to start the suspension. With summer approaching and a job coming up soon and all the other stuff college kids do during the summer i need my license and do not want to pay to get an occupational license. So im asking, when PENNdot does finally send me something requesting my license. How long do i have to turn it in? Becuase if the license suspension doesn't start untill i turn it in, then i'll just turn it in right before school starts again in the fall and keep it all summer? Please answer this to the best of your knowledge because there is no info about it online.
Your license is suspended as soon as PennDOT is notified of the conviction. They will send a notice to your last address on file. That notice will ask you to turn in the license or complete a DL-16 form. The reason it is taking this long is either the court has not notified PennDOT of the conviction or PennDOT sent the notice to a different address.
Once your PA license is suspended you can't just hold on to the license and keep driving until you feel like turning it in. The driver's license suspension will start but you will not receive any credit toward the suspension time until PennDOT receives an acknowledgment (license or form). You must turn your PA driver's license in to PennDOT as soon as you get the notice, or you find out you are under suspension.
If I were you, I would contact PennDOT's call center at 1-800-932-4600 and ask them the status of your license. If they say it is still valid you can continue to drive. If they say it has been suspended then turn in the license or DL-16 form.
If this is your first underage alcohol violation then your license suspension is for 90 days. If it is your second underage alcohol violation then the license suspension is for one year. If this is your third or greater violation then your driver's license will be suspended for two years. You can only qualify for the occupational license if it is your first violation.
