Getting credit for the pa license suspension time you are serving may be harder thatn you think.

Make sure PennDOT has your license!

I can't say this enough, and it seems I have been dealing with a lot of this issues recently. When you are convicted of a violation that carries a suspension, you will be given a suspension "start date". This date is when your suspension goes into effect and when you are no longer permitted to drive. This is NOT the date that the clock starts ticking to your suspension end date.

To start getting credit for any suspension time you accrued you will need to acknowledge your suspension to PennDOT and only PennDOT. Telling the judge or police officer is not good enough.

There are two ways to properly acknowledge your suspension. The first is to turn your drivers license to PennDOT. You must turn in any and all products. This includes camera cards, motorcycle cards, duplicate cards....just everything that might be used as a license.

Option two is filling out a DL-16 form and submitting that. This will explain to PennDOT that you know you are under suspension and will start the clock toward your suspension. If you do it properly you will get a notice like the one below in the mail shortly after sending it to PennDOT.

Surrender 2

Please send all correspondence to PennDOT via certified mail with a return receipt requested. You need to know they got it, and you need proof you sent it.

Good Luck!
Vince
